The next Optional Conversation takes place after you escape from the patrolling soldiers and make your way to the large building. Optional Conversation #04 | The Outskirts This one is hard to miss given the way it’s set up. As soon as you have control of Joel, follow Tess over to the window and have a quick chat. This Optional Conversation takes place at the beginning of Chapter 3: The Outskirts. Optional Conversation #03 | The Outskirts You’ve gone too far if you get to the point where you have to retrieve the ladder. Follow Tess out the door where you’ll be able to trigger this Optional Conversation. You’ll find yourself in an abandoned restaurant. Boost Tess up to the ledge, then join her and emerge from the tunnel. This chat takes place after you get your backpack and learn to reload your weapon. Optional Conversation #02 | The Quarantine Zone Approach them and press Triangle to have a chat. Instead, head to the right where two people stand on the sidewalk. As you make your way down the street, avoid turning left and going to the checkpoint. Joel and Tess will leave his residence and head out to find Robert. The first Optional Conversation is just after the chapter’s opening cut scene.
